Anjanette Galvez: Pitching for the gold
by: Jessa Grace T. Olesco
Having competed for the last year’s National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA), there is no stopping for Anjanette Galvez, or simply AJ, to aim for more.
Born on September 5, 1995 from San Ildefonso, Bulacan, she considers her family as her greatest influence as her uncles and aunts also had a wide history playing softball. Despite a young age of 17, Galvez was no first timer in the field as she began her sports career in her elementary years when a softball coach offered her to play for the school’s team. She vows herself to the sport since then and became the Athlete of the Year in her senior year in San Miguel National High School.
AJ joined SCUAA as soon as she entered college. Being new in the team had never been a hindrance for her to be in charge as the captain for the SCUAA regionals last year wherein her team landed on the 2nd place. By then, she was chosen, together with her three co-members, to take part on the 2012 National SCUAA merging with Central Luzon State University (CLSU) and ended on the 2nd spot after their defeat against the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Bachelor in Physical Education sophomore student is currently on her second year playing for the BulSU’s much-celebrated Women’s Softball Team as a pitcher. This year, she gives up her leadership position but still takes part on guiding her teammates being the Assistant Team Captain.
Galvez involves herself in tune-up games no other than baseball as advised by their team coach Rommel Sta. Ana.
“Pagka ibang sports yung nilaro namin, sasakit yung braso. Pinakaimportante [yung braso] lalo na sa pitcher,” she explained.
A full-time scholar, AJ said that while the university provides adequate equipment and facilities conducive for the athletes’ training, the monthly allowance worth P800 that she receives is, most of the time, delayed. Yet, she exerts her full efforts to make the very best out of everything during training.
No matter how hectic her schedule is, Galvez never fails to manage her studies well as she said it is a must to do so.
“Hangga’t hindi tapos yung klase namin, pagka-oras ng midterm, pinagrereview kami. Wala kaming training kasi kailangan din. Hindi ka makakapaglaro nang may bagsak ka,” she stated.
Though the softball team recently faces lack of members, AJ stays positive that there is still a long way to go for preparations to be made before the awaited event on the first week of December.
“Sa ngayon kasi may gumraduate sa amin. Tapos ngayon medyo kulang pa kami. Pero solid naman. Pero mapaghahandaan pa naman yun. Ilang buwan pa din naman,” she reasoned.
Conducting intensive training after classes in the university and whole day exercises every Saturday in Bulacan Sports Complex as a sworn athlete, Galvez is quite confident her team will win this year’s competition.
“Oo kasi yun [manalo] din ang ine-expect sa amin ngayon. Kasi yung sa CLSU ang lamang lang nila isa lang kaya sila nanalo sa amin nun. Sa kanila wala pang gumraduate ngayon. Solid talaga sila nung nakaraan. Tsaka puro pa kami baguhan last year,” she ended.
With the expectations growing bigger, hopes getting stronger, and achievements soaring higher, AJ Galvez will definitely do her best to hit the home run.
