James Manjares: BulSU Baseball Team’s new kid to expect for
By: Jessa Grace T. Olesco
Being a newbie in Bulacan State University’s prestigious baseball team will not definitely stop Henry James Reyes Manjares from competing for State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association Region III (SCUAA-III) this coming December.
The 17-year old sophomore taking Bachelor in Physical Education born December 5, 1995 from Malolos, Bulacan, James is more than just a freshly-picked member of the ever-glorified BulSU Baseball Team as he had been already an experienced baseball player for about eight years even way back out of the university.
Manjares started playing baseball at his 4th grade with his father as his biggest inspiration also in line with the sport. He used to be the game’s 3rd baseman and at the same time catcher during his elementary years and a full-pledged catcher in his dear alma mater Marcelo H. Del Pilar National High School. In his earlier years, he joined several competitions and bagged silver medal in his fourth year of secondary level during the Malolos City Meet in 2011.
Entering college, James shied away himself from SCUAA for a year and instead focused more on his studies before being part of the university’s team. Yet, he continued playing his beloved sport in Inter-barangay Championships where the team he used to be part of dominated and garnered trophy in the 2012 Mayor’s Cup. Despite all the achievements every team he belonged to has, he never lets his feet get off the ground.
“Hindi kasi mahalaga sa akin yun [achievements]. Ang sa akin lang, kung saang team ako kasali, dapat manalo,” he said humbly yet confidently.
Being a BulSU scholar currently receiving a monthly allowance worth P300 lower from the previous P600, Manjares told that the incentives he gets from being a player is enough. He added that the school provides enough equipment, facilities, and adequate training under Coach Melvin Villegas. Furthermore, he believes that being an athlete should not be used as an excuse to skip off his duties as a student.
“Depende din sa’yo kung magsisipag ka o magtatamad-tamaran ka. [Pero] hindi naman napapabayaan [ang grades],” he reasoned.
Daily training his way for three hours on tune-up games after class plus additional Saturday shifts together with his teammates, he is bound to set on the field carrying the name of BulSU this year. He may be a latest addition on the baseball team’s line-up but sure as he is, Manjares is ready to strive for the home run in SCUAA.
