Over speeding tops common car violations in NLEX; drivers admit habitual speeding
By: Fiona Marielli Paclipan
Overspeeding is considered the most common violation in class 1 vehicles in North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), according to Land Transportation Office (LTO) under Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC).
LTO Liaison officer to NLEX Vivencio Santos said that overspeeding is still the number one committed violation by class 1 vehicles including private cars, SUV’s and vans in NLEX.
“Overspeeding talaga ang number one pa rin na violation sa North Luzon highway,” said Santos. “Next lang ang ‘no breaklights’ sa listahan.”
COMMON MISTAKE
Jorel Concepcion, 19 years old and a licensed non-professional driver, said that when he is in the said expressway, he has the tendency to overspeed.
“Smooth roads kasi,” said Concepcion. “Kaya talagang masarap magpatakbo minsan nalilingat ako, napapabilis kaya ayun, nahuli ako minsan.”
Concepcion confessed that even his friends that are also licensed drivers have also committed the same violation more than once.
“Ganun rin kasi, napapasarap sila ng takbo,” he laughed. “Pero malban dun, nag-iingat na rin kami.”
Same story applies for John Paul Policarpio, 17 and has a student’s permit.
“Nung nag-aaral talaga ako, masarap magpatakbo ng mabilis,” Policarpio said. “Pero kapag maulan, o kapag nasa highway ako sumusunod na ako, mahirap na, baka maaksidente.”
EVEN CELEBRITIES AND POLITICIANS
Santos also stated that even celebrities and government officials were being caught violating the designated speed limit inside NLEX.
“Kahit sila Cristine Reyes at nanay ni Ryzza Mae Dizon, napapara ng mga patrol sa NLEX ‘yan,” said Santos. “Pati minsan mga government officials nahuhuli dito.”
In cases of firetrucks, ambulances and police cars in hot puruit, they are exempted on following the assigned speed limit, and it is given already that the drivers assigned to take over emergency vehicles like that should practice safe and responsible driving.
“Emergency cases like that, hindi sila kasama sa ganun,” Santos stated. “Kailangan lang eh, mag-ingat at maging responsible sila.”
According to Santos, most common violations by class 2 and 3 vehicles, (passenger buses and heavy trucks) are “defective breaklight” and “obstruction.”
